StGC won 1-0. Robert Bailey, Star Writer St Georges coach Neville Bell says there is still a lot to do despite being just in reach of the coveted urban area schoolboy football double crown. The Light Blues booked their place in the ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup following a 1-0 win over Wolmer's Boys at the Constant Spring Sports Complex yesterday. "We are very happy to be in two finals but we haven't won anything yet and so the work will continue for us," Bell told Star Sports. George's striker Kendon Anderson flourished as he scored a spectacular first half goal to guide his team to the win. The diminutive Anderson found the back of the net for the North Street team in the 14th minute to move his tally to 22 overall this season, 17 of which have come in the Manning Cup. "I am very happy with my performance," said Anderson. "I was able to score the winning goal, which puts us in the final and so we just have to go back to training and get ourselves ready for this," said Anderson, who represents Cavalier in the youth leagues. The Georgians will oppose rivals Kingston College in the final of the Walker Cup. The speedy and skilful Anderson tormented the Wolmer's defenders with his dribbling skills and clever off-the-ball movement throughout the match. The striker scored when he controlled the ball on his chest between two defenders, then turned away from both players to volley home a powerful right-footed shot past custodian Amal Knight. Anderson came close to doubling his team's lead a few minutes later when he collected a through pass from Oshane Booth inside the 18-yard box, but with Knight at his mercy, he shot wide of the target. National Under-17 player Romario Jones should have increased the StGC's lead on the stroke of half-time, but his point-blank shot went high over the crossbar. The Heroes Circle-based Wolmer's dominated the early exchanges in the second period, as they created number of clear-cut chances, which they failed to capitalise on. Chevon Montgomery had clearest opportunity to give Wolmer's the equaliser 10-minutes after the interval, but with StGC's goalkeeper Nico Campbell at his mercy, he fired wide of the goal. Five minutes later, Wolmer's Jason Wright also came close scoring for his team, but his weak right-footed effort was saved by Campbell. However, StGC went to dominate the remainder of the game, but they failed to capitalise on a number of easy chances. "I am happy with our performance," said Bell. "It was a tough game and we expected it and so I am not surprised Wolmer's played the way they did," Bell said of the encounter. Ludlow Bernard, coach of Wolmer's, was disappointed with the results but not the boys' performance. "We played against a very good team today and we gave it everything we got and we came up short." |
