Pagon continues resurgence |

National Davis Cup representative Dominic Pagon continued his resurgence as one of the island's top players after putting in a clinical display in his opening game of the NCB Capital Markets Tennis Open yesterday evening at the Liguanea Club to get by countryman David Goldsmith. Pagon was Jamaica's top seeded player in action on yesterday's opening day of the five-day event and he stamped his class with a straight-sets 6-2, 6-0 victory. He will continue his quest today for the men's singles purse of US$6,000 when he tackles compatriot Dane Vernon, who got by Carlos Phillpotts 6-0, 6-2 in one of nine other games contested. "I played a pretty good match, stuck with the game plan as I normally do and pressured his back hand," Pagon said. "I am feeling pretty confident, I am moving well and things are going well for me right now," he added. This is the 23-year-old's fourth tournament back after missing all of last year, as he sought to recover from ankle and shoulder injuries. Pagon came out on top in his previous tournament, but will be hard-pressed to do so this time around with the presence of ATP ranked players. not scared "It is great that they are here; I am not by any means scared that they are here," Pagon said. "When I was playing tennis in college, they were on pretty much the same level, so I am not intimidated by it," he added. In the day's other matches, Oshane Trail took a mere 26 minutes to get the better of Dwayne Lue Shing 6-4, 6-1 to set up a meeting with number-two seed Hayden Lewis of Barbados. Macoy Malcolm earned the right to meet number-six seed Dwayne Pagon after getting by Horatio Ludford 6-0, 6-3. Jones turned back the challenge of Michael Sutherland 6-2, 6-3. Jones will next play number-three seed Nikita Kryvonos of the USA. Jamaica's top-ranked male player Damion Johnson will have his first taste of action today when he faces USA's Murphey Parker who defeated Jordon Harris 6-2, 6-4. Jamaican's Nicholas Malcolm and Canadian George Jecminek are down to meet tomorrow after getting by Peter Azar 6-2, 6-1 and Yussuf Migoko 6-4, 6-3, respectively. Today will also witness ATP 512-ranked men's number-one seed Oliver Sajous out of Haiti bowing into action after receiving a bye when he tackles Canadian Max Brown who also received a bye. Belgium's 11th-ranked and women's number-one seed, 20-year-old Michaela Boev, will lead nine other women into action today when she takes on Jamaica's Lisa Chin. |
