Nurse runs up $1M phone bill - Fired for calling relatives

A Milwaukee jail nurse in the United States may be facing criminal charges for making well over a $1 million worth of phone calls to relatives in Jamaica, NBC Today's TMJ4 has reported.

THE STAR understands that the accused spent plenty of her work time making US$20,000 worth of personal and international phone calls on her work phone over the course of two years.

It is reported that the Milwaukee county sheriff wants to press criminal charges.

The county's Information Technology department discovered the log of calls and turned the matter over to the sheriff's department earlier this year.

However, THE STAR understands that the district attorney has indicated that there is no law on the books for this kind of behaviour.

THE STAR also understands that the district attorney claims the loss of taxpayer dollars could have been avoided with better oversight.

Meanwhile, the accused woman has been fired pending a review by the county's personnel board.
