![]() Akeem 'Galawasp' Davis (second left) and Ricardo 'Swanga' Ellis hang out with students from the Edna Manley College after their talk on Monday. - Contributed Two young men who are members of the Denham Town, Kingston, community, took on different roles this past Monday, when they were invited to be 'guest lecturers' in the Department of Arts Management at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.
As part of a course called 'Managing Community Arts' which is taught by popular comedian Owen 'Blakka' Ellis, students explore the processes involved in organising and implementing forms such as murals and community dances. So Swanga and Galawasp came and shared with the students, the how, what, who and why behind a weekly community dance. Ricardo 'Swanga' Ellis is founder of the 'Easy Scream Crew' and one of the organisers of a weekly community dance called 'Scream Sundaes' that has been going on every Sunday since mid-2007, on Wellington Street in Denham Town. It's a free dancehall session that has become a regular part of the community's tradition. Akeem 'Galawasp' Davis is an up-and-coming dancehall artiste, a singer/DJ from the community. He is the 'Easy Scream' crew's main performer with his recently released single called Life Change. The duo gave a clear and enlightening talk on the background and rationale behind these weekly community dances. They presented the community dances as vital avenues for youths to relieve stress, for new talents to get a chance to shine, for communities to get together, and for increased commercial activity at the community level. And according to Gallawasp, "we have a disciplined community, so yu nuh haffi worry, no violence and bad vibes nuh deh a our dance". Their presentation was so convincing and inspiring, that the entire class will be visiting Denham Town this coming Sunday, November 20, to enjoy, observe and experience the 'Scream Sundaes' vibes first- hand. Special guests will be passing through, including Rozah Roze, famous for his "lock it back" line from the Ity & Fancy Cat Show.
