10-month wait for cigarette

Man sent to get items in January, returned last week

Ten months after an accused man was entrusted with $6,000 by another man to purchase a pack of cigarettes on his behalf, the complainant told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday that he was yet to receive the tobacco-flavoured item.

Wailton Watt, of a Kingston 2 address who was charged with fraudulent conversion, told the court that, "Because I never get the cigarette, the money get mixed up and used up," which amused the court.

No evidence was eventually offered and the accused was admonished and discharged after restitution in the amount of $6,000 was made to the complainant and he told the court that he would give the defendant the benefit of the doubt.

The court heard that about 6:30 p.m. on January 15, the complainant entrusted the accused with money to buy cigarettes on his behalf. However, the defendant was not seen again until November 3 when the complainant pointed him out to police on patrol in the Cross Roads area.

He was taken into custody and later charged.
