Leighton Levy, STAR Writer
President of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA), Howard Aris, died yester-day at the age of 75. Aris was at a People's National Party (PNP) rally in Port Antonio, Portland, when he became ill, reports said. Initial reports said Aris, who led Kingston College to 14 successive titles at Boys Championships between 1962 and 1975, died of a massive heart attack. Information reaching THE WEEKEND STAR said Aris was at the rally when he complained that he wasn't feeling well. He retreated to a vehicle that took Leader of the Opposition Portia Simpson Miller to the rally when he suffered a heart attack. He was being rushed to the Port Antonio Hospital when he died.
Track and field website Trackalerts.com reported that Peter Bunting, general secretary of the People's National Party, confirmed that Aris was found in a car sometime after 9:30 p.m. "My understanding is he was in a car while the meeting was going on, and when someone went to check on him, he was found in an unconscious state," the website
quoted Bunting as saying.
It was only a few years ago that he underwent bypass surgery and was said to be doing fine. Reports also indicate that Aris had been his usual self throughout the day.
