On February 8, the fate of two St Catherine-based teachers who are charged with assault occasioning bodily harm will be decided after it was reported that they beat a student with a piece of pipe. Those charged include a principal and a physical education teacher of a primary school in the parish.
When they appeared in the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, the matter was put off.
Defence attorney Deborah Martin told the court that the complainant has a history of disruptive behaviour.
She highlighted that on the day in question, the teachers rescued a girl that was being assaulted by a group of boys including the complainant.
"Your Honour, he has been counselled by the school's guidance counsellor for his disruptive behaviour," Martin said.
Resident Magistrate Natalee Brookes expressed concern about the complainant and the girl who was assaulted before requesting that more social intervention take place in the matter.
Attorney-at-law Sean Kinghorn told the court the the complainant is undergoing counselling.
Clerk of Court Nicola Rowe outlined that on June 24, about noon, the girl was looking for a book near a dance class.
It alleged that the boy gyrated suggestively on her while she bent over to pick up the book.
The court learnt that he was taken to the principal's office where he was beaten with a piece of PVC pipe.
The principal is said to have summoned the physical education teacher who used the same pipe to beat him.
It is said that when he went home his body was black and blue all over.
The complainant reported the matter to his mother and a subsequent report to the police resulted in the accused men being summoned to court.
The teachers are being represented by attorney-at-law Robert Pickersgill. |
