Robert Bailey, STAR Writer
Former champions Calabar High and St George's College (StGC) will clash on Friday to decide the semi-final winner from Group K of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Gatorade/ Digicel Manning Cup competition, this after both teams recorded important victories in yesterday's round of matches. In the opening match of the double-header played at the Constant Spring Sports Complex, Calabar, led by a brace from substitute Kyle Scott, thrashed Penwood 4-0 while StGC defeated Camperdown 2-0. The win moved St George's to maximum six points, the same as Calabar. However, St George's are on top on goal difference. They have six goals for and none against while Calabar have scored the same number of goals but have conceded one goal. The match will also be a repeat of the recent Walker Cup semi-finals where the Light Blues came out 5-0 winners over Calabar. Scott netted his goals in the 56th and 61st minutes for the Marvin Tate-coached boys from Red Hills Road. Paul Newman (16th), Saskie Daley (22nd) were the other scorers Calabar. "St George's have proved that they are a tough team because they beat us 5-0 a couple weeks ago," said Tate. "However, we are very positive that we will give a good account of ourselves because we will be at full strength for the match."
In the feature game, Kendon Anderson netted a double to guide StGC to victory over Camperdown. Anderson has now moved his tally of goals for the season to 15 in the competition.
Neville 'Bertis' Bell, coach of the StGC, who last won the title in 2009, said his team is looking forward to the clash against Calabar.
"We are confident, but the Walker Cup game was a week and a half ago and so that has nothing to do with this," said Bell.
"They will be a different team and they are a pretty decent team with some good players and we certainly know that it will be a tough game, but we hope that we can come out on top," Bell said.
Anderson opened the scoring in the second minute when he showed good awareness to beat Camperdown's offside trap and side-footed past Rushaun Patterson in goal. He then added his second in the 69th minute when he fired home from close range.
Reflecting on his team's performance Bell said:"I am happy with the result because I don't think that we were good in the first half, but Camperdown came and they played well."
The competition will continue today with action in Group I.
Wolmer's will play Ascot in the first game of a double-header at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, while in the second game Jose Marti will take on Hydel. The second round is divided into four groups with the winners of each earmarked to play in the semi-finals.
