A Surinamese man accused of cocaine possession was fined a total of $800,000 in court yesterday, after narcotics officers found 126 cylindrical parcels on his body.
Orlando Overman, 36, a promoter from Paramaribo, Suriname, was charged with possession of, dealing in, importing and conspiracy to import cocaine. Overman was fined $400,000 or spend 12 months in jail while the charge for dealing in cocaine was admonished. For importing cocaine, he was fined $400,000 or 12 months in jail. In addition, he was sentenced to two years in prison. He was also given an additional two years for the conspiracy charge. The sentences will run concurrently and consecutively if fines are not paid. This means he will serve at least three years in prison. It is alleged that on October 24, about 11:15 a.m., Overman arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport, Kingston, on Insel Airlines from Suriname. Overman was stopped, interviewed and his luggage searched by the police. However, there was no breach detected. However, due to the inconsistency in answers to questions asked, a sample of his urine was requested. The accused was taken to the Narcotics office where he consented; a sample was tested and it gave a positive reading for the presence of cocaine. Overman was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital to be examined where foreign objects were seen in his stomach. While there he expelled a total of 126 cylindrical parcels containing white powdery substance resembling cocaine weighing approximately 3.9lb. |
