Pat Rousseau, chairman of International Media Content (IMC), and its subsidiary SportsMax, yesterday expressed delight that his company was chosen by FIFA to be owners of the broadcast rights for the Caribbean for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The broadcast rights, which became an issue recently after the original owner, Trinidad-based JDI, was stripped of the privilege by FIFA, will see IMC/SportsMax delivering the event to a host of broadcasters around the region, including Jamaica's CVM Television.

"With minor variations, FIFA has signed a new contract directly with IMC for us to be original owners of broadcast rights for the region of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil," said Rousseau at a press conference, held at the Wyndham hotel.

"This is indeed a proud moment for IMC and SportsMax and we are delighted, and as we have done in the past, we plan to deliver to the people of the region world-class coverage of the event."

JDI, which is owned by Austin 'Jack' Warner, and had sold the broadcast rights to IMC/SportsMax in 2007 for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, was stripped of this right after Warner was implicated in a recent FIFA presidential cash-for-votes scandal.

Warner, in the aftermath of the allegations, has since resigned from all football-related activities.

The JDI after acquiring the original broadcast rights of FIFA events typically used to off-sell these rights to IMC/SportsMax, which would then off-sell these said rights to other regional broadcasters, including Jamaican free-to-air station CVM Television.
