CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer
International dance-hall/reggae artistes T.O.K. have formed a partnership with local producer Karl Morrison of Star Player Music. According to T.O.K.'s Flexx, Morrison has worked on some of the most successful records in dancehall with little or no credit. "T.O.K. is just doing some work with Karl to let the people know that he does good production and he is the mastermind behind many of our local hits," Flexx said. The newly formed team, is set to "bring back real dancehall', which according to Flexx is not living up to its legacy. "We do real authentic dancehall production not some hip-hop thing. Six years ago, we had like five dancehall artistes on the Billboards, BET and so forth, now we don't have that and one of the problems is what the DJs choose to play," he said. According to Flexx, the local DJs are unconsciously suffocating dancehall when they play only one set of artistes. "We just want to say be mindful what you play because you are damaging the music," he said. Karl Morrison, who was also present at the interview, says that he thinks that some of the new producers haven't done enough homework on dancehall. "You producers must go and listen people like Dave Kelly, do your homework and make music grow. When everything sounds the same it's downhill for us," he said. Morrison, who is also a singer, has produced rhythms for Arif Cooper, Busy Signal's Picante, One More Night and Night Shift, among others. He also produced the track for Sean Paul's Hold My Hand and scored a hit with the dancehall rhythm called National Pride. The producer, who has affirmed his partnership in T.O.K.'s Di Link team, says that the reason for doing his own production is because the local producers are greedy and tend to assume credit for other people's work. "I branched off into my own production because most producers are dishonest and they don't give you respect or acknowledgement for your work, even Michael Jackson gave credit to his writers, so why is it so hard for local people in the industry; it's just greed," he said. Morrison recently completed productions for Lutan Fyah's latest studio album called New Day, which is available on iTunes and Ditto.com. According to Flexx and Karl Morrison, D Link is set to go full strength with their 'Save the Music' campaign. Morrison, who is also the producer of the controversial single One More Night, says that his relationship with Busy Signal has deteriorated. "We and Busy Signal are not on good terms because of what happened with Night Shift. Something went down and I wasn't pleased, so we went our separate ways. People think Busy Signal's manager produced the song but I Karl Morrison did it," he said. According to the producer, he does not intend to draw anybody's name through the mud because he is focused on doing good music. "I'm not even going to pay much attention to the negative musicians/producers, I'm just focused on doing the music and the Save the Music campaign," he said.
