Brothers on ganja charge freed

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Two brothers charged with having ganja weighing 1,000 pounds in their possession were freed after the Crown failed in its bid to connect them to the drug when they appeared in court on Monday.

Those freed are Carlisle and Omar Williams of Linstead, St Catherine.

Resident Magistrate (RM) Marcia Dunbar told the Clerk of Court Lori-Ann Cole-Montague not to take any further evidence as there was nothing to link the accused men to the ownership of the narcotic when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court..

The men were ordered freed after police personnel gave conflicting stories on how the ganja was transported and stored.

One of the policemen told the court that both accused were present when the drug was being sealed and labeled by detectives.

Another testified that the men were not present when the exhibit was being labeled.

The RM said there were glaring discrepancies in the testimonies of the policemen.

In March last year, police personnel from the Narcotics Division held the accused in Linstead during an operation.

A Honda motor car was seen parked laden with the compressed ganja. Both accused were reportedly held after one allegedly told the detectives he was the driver of the car.

The were charged with possession of dealing in taking steps to export and trafficking ganja.

The accused told the court he was under duress when he told police he drove the car.

RM asked that a letter be addressed to Police Commissioner Owen Ellington on the shabby work done by the police.

Both accused men defended themselves during the trial.
