It was Heroes Day, a public holiday, but a group of residents from Sanguinetti in northwest Clarendon took time out to do something for the children and school in their community.

Headed by community leader Leebert Cross, residents decided a pedestrian crossing was needed in front of the Sanguinetti Primary School, and worked to make it a reality.

The men, who provided the paint and other material, started their work early, following up on a paving project in the schoolyard a few weeks ago. Cross told THE STAR students were having difficulties crossing the road to their school, and decided to ask volunteers in the community to assist him.

"In these hard times, we have to help out wherever we can. We cannot always rely on Government. We have to be self-reliant in some instances and that's what we are doing," explained Cross.

Cross said it was not difficult getting volunteers to assist him with the work, as they gladly volunteered. He stressed that material were acquired from a hardware store in Spaldings and refreshments from a bakery to feed the workers.

The community member explained that he felt pleased knowing the work they set out to do had been completed as they will certainly add to the safety of the students and teachers at his alma mater. He said he felt more comfortable knowing children who attend Sanguinetti Primary and their parents will have less discomfort crossing the road near the institution.

Cross said more work is planned for the school and members of the community are willing to assist in whatever way they can to further uplift the institution.
