Rasbert Turner, Star Writer High drama unfolded along Adelaide Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine, yesterday, during a robbery attempt of a postal truck at the Spanish Town Post Office. A security guard was shot and injured in the incident before four men who are believed to be the gunmen escaped from the scene. A car was seized by the police following the incident, and the post office was ordered closed to the public to facilitate an investigation. Police reports are that about 7 a.m., a truck laden with postal items was making a scheduled delivery. It is reported that four armed men tried to hold up the truck but they were challenged by the security guard on the vehicle. A shoot-out ensued during which the guard was shot in his lower back. Reports are that the men drove away, breaking the one way along Hanover Street and smashing into a policeman's car. The men then abandoned the vehicle and ran on to Young Street before escaping. The post office is a collection point for many pensioners and PATH beneficiaries. Many persons expressed shock at the brazen act. The Spanish Town police is investigating the matter. |
