The hotter the battle the sweeter the victory. Such is the sentiment shared by the contenders in the 2011 Guinness Sounds of Greatness competition. The TV show has put the spotlight on many sound systems, both young and veteran sounds, while showcasing one of dancehalls most exciting element - The Sound Clash. Now in the semi-final stage of the competition, 12 sounds have been reduced to four. Black Blunt will go up against Rich Squad and Silverhawk and Sound Trooper will do battle, paving the way for the ultimate matchup in the finals. Black Blunt's Avatar: "If I win the competition, I would make five kids very happy." In the last battle for supremacy, 'Hot Shot' sound Black Blunt continued on the winning trail by being true to its mantra: "Everyting dead!" These words are often repeated by the entertaining and comical frontman Avatar, who insists that he is often left speechless by the adoration that the man in the street has shown him. Since the start of the competition Avatar admits that the sound has grown: "Mi neva really expect the soun' fi get suh popular in such a short time, Jah know." He has taken the advice of many of his critics but is very careful not to lose his sense of creativity and keep the crowd fully entertained. He recounts the first clash with the Coppershot sound system as his most memorable as it was then that the respect and admiration began for the Westmoreland-based sound system. He credits that first matchup as the one that made people stop and listen.
"We all know sey Guinness a big brand and Black Blunt a get bigger and better. It woulda be a great honour to be a Guinness ambassador".
He adds that this partnership would be the icing on the cake as he journeys to ultimate greatness in the competition.
Avatar's immediate plans are to make the lives of five special people in his life happier with the prize money. "Mi nah lef out mi four pickney dem, mi get two girls and two boys". He said he would purchase five bicycles, one each for his four children and the other for his niece. The rest he would leave to the will of his management.
Little Richie: "This has been a great journey; I have put the words of doubters to naught."
For Little Richie, frontman for Rich Squad, the Guinness Sounds of Greatness has been a training ground. He was the first champion, beating challenger Crazy Chris to advance. He then faced Bredda Hype, who proved to be a worthy contender, but not tough enough.
"I am very humbled by the added respect that I have gained from my peers but most importantly I am grateful for being given the chance to prove negative people wrong," Little Richie said. He likens the competition to a ladder, carefully surpassing each rung by doing his research and taking good advice.
Throughout the competition, Little Richie has maintained that the Rich Squad sound system is 'unpredictable like dice' and he has consistently shown that during his sets.
Known for his calm demeanour, Little Richie takes on a completely different persona whenever he hits the stage. On stage, he gets into character and plays the part of a talented and spontaneous selector. "Although mi might get a little nervous before the clash, when mi touch di stage all a dat vanish," he said confidently.
He recounts many instances in the competition as memorable, however, what stands out in his mind is the overwhelming reception he has got, especially since the clashes have been aired on TVJ. This opportunity is taking him closer to his ultimate goal of the sound becoming a household name both locally and internationally.
Little Richie reveals that it would be an honour to be an ambassador for beverage giant Guinness. It was Guinness that gave the sound the opportunity to showcase its capabilities to a national TV audience, a feat that would have been tedious otherwise. While the winning purse of $1 million is very attractive, Little Richie says he is also focused on building the sound's image.
Front man from veteran sound system Silverhawk says his advance in the competition has been a fitting rev in its engine. So far the sound has proven that it is still in tune with the trends in the entertainment arena.
"I am on a mission" says Richie Poo, "to, among other things, prove that authentic culture of sound clashing in Jamaica remains in the heart of truly talented musicians. Di bag a long and unnecessary talking nuh mek it".
Though short, he describes his journey so far in the competition as rewarding: "Don't get me wrong though, there is still much more work to be done, and we would be honoured to be the ambassador for Guinness and would take people down memory lane". So far he has been true to his belief in less talk and more music, saying the music can speak for itself and does not need an ever present commentator.
He deems his most memorable achievement on the journey so far is that his fan base has broadened, as now the younger generation is gravitating to his style.
He believes that his sound would be a fitting ambassador for the Guinness Sounds of Greatness - a great sound in conjunction with a great brand: "That is hard to beat," said Richie Poo.
Fellow veteran sound system Sound Trooper has proven why it remains one of the most respected sound systems around in the Guinness Sounds of Greatness TV show. Lead man Ricky Trooper said he loves the added popularity the sound has gained, especially with the younger audience: "I have been given the opportunity to right many wrongs - somewhat of a redemption." And for this selector, who has gained international acclaim over the years, Trooper says "there is no greater honour than to be able to thrill a Jamaican crowd".
The journey in the competition so far has been rewarding and this has motivated him to do even better so fans can focus on the music and take their minds off his infamous Youtube rant. "Mi jus waan people get pass di Youtube ting," Trooper lamented.
Known for his fiery sets, Ricky Trooper says he would be honoured to be a Guinness ambassador by winning the competition. "This would give me the chance to portray a different side of my persona," said Trooper.
Like the other semi-finalists, Trooper is more concerned about the love that he has been gaining from the fans and the adoration and respect, which he says are priceless. "That is worth much more than one million dollars."
Who will be the ultimate champion in the Guinness Sounds of Greatness competition 2011, Black Blunt, Little Richie, Silverhawk or Sound Trooper? Tune in to TVJ on Saturdays at 9:30 p.m., for the final three episodes and watch Greatness unfold.
