George 'Big George' Nelson was duly honoured by the Portmore Municipal Council on Heroes Day October 17 when a park on Canal drive in Garvey-meade was opened in his memory.

Nelson, who is now dead, was described as 'the pioneer' who paved the way for Portmore being a municipality. Nelson was a part of the group that formed the Portmore Joint Citizens' Association.

At the function, mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds, lauded Big George, a man who stood at 6' 5", for his early work in the sunshine city, including a sunshine talent contest which unearthed stars for the local entertainment market.

Nelson's widow, Pametria Blackman-Nelson, also paid tribute to him.

The Rastafarians were out in their numbers beating drums first used by their ancestors from Africa and chanted a tribute to Nelson's memory.

Also in attendance were Deputy Mayor Owen Saunderson, former Mayor George Lee, who gave Mrs Nelson a plaque, councillor for Bridgeport division, Maggie Brown; the former actor Carl Bradshaw and Leon Thomas of the Hellshire division. Thomas said that as early as age 19, Nelson shaped his character and to what he his currently.
