AFTER several delays, the 2011 Inter-Collegiate Netball competition will start today as Caribbean Maritime Institute will host G.C.Foster College 'A' in a Senior League fixture at 4 p.m.

Some five matches are also slated for this Saturday with The Mico University College hosting a double. At 10 a.m., their 'A' team will take on G.C.Foster 'B' while at 11:30 a.m., their 'B' team will do battle with Exed.

Portmore Community College will host Bethlehem Moravian College at 10 a.m, the same time Moneague will be at home to UWI 'B' and at 11 a.m., Shortwood will be at home to Sam Sharpe.

discontent

The competition, which was scheduled to start some eight days ago, was delayed because of discontent between two senior teams following the Opening Rally two weeks ago in Montego Bay. The organisers had decided that only three teams, Mico 'A', G.C. Foster College 'A' and defending champions UWI 'A' were the only teams that would have participated in the Senior League with 11 teams in both the Intermediate and junior League. However, both UWI and Mico objected to this and the organisers had to revert to its new format, which will now consist of an Upper Level Open League and a Lower Level League.

The Upper Level League will see teams divided into three Zones. In Zone A will be Mico 'A', G.C.Foster 'B', UTech, Sam Sharpe Teachers' College and Shortwood Teachers' College. Defending champions UWI will head Zone 'B' which will also have Mico 'B', Bethlehem Moravian College, Portmore Community College and Exed Community College, while in Zone II G.C.Foster 'A' will be joined by UWI 'B', Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) and Moneague Community College.

battle

Ten teams led by G.C.Foster College 'C' will do battle in the Lower Level League. The remaining teams are Northern Caribbean University, Brown's Town Community College, Church Teachers' College, Knox Community College, Shortwood Teachers' College, St Joseph's Teachers' College, College of Agriculture Science and Education, Edna Manley College and Vocational Training Division Institute.

For this year's competition, players will have much to play for as Jamaica will seek to compete in the first-ever World University Netball Championships, which will be played in Cape Town, South Africa. Following the completion of the competition in December, a squad of 24 players will be selected to start training in January in a bid to be part of the World Championships team.
