Wolmer's coach Ludlow Bernard says his team will be spending the next two weeks trying to get their house in order as they prepare for the second round of the ISSA/ Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup. The boys from Heroes Circle, who qualified for the second round after copping the best-third place spot, did so despite going down 2-1 to Group C winners Charlie Smith at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. "We still have a lot of work to do, and over the next few days we will be working on these areas," said Bernard, whose team finished with 17 points, four behind second-place Ascot, and eight behind Charlie Smith. "I still believe we have a good team, and a good chance of winning the title, it is just for us to try and get things right," he added. The game, which was one of 18 rescheduled matches in the final round of the preliminary round, saw Charlie Smith taking the lead through a header from Vishiunl Harris in the 12th minute. This lead was then cancelled out in the 24th minute when impressive 14-year-old Jaheel Hyde showing good awareness anticipated a defence-splitting pass and lobbed goalkeeper Sulane Powell. But determined to show that their 4-3 first-leg win was no fluke, Charlie Smith restored their lead in the 78th minute when Kemar McGhie netted in a goal mouth melee, a lead that stood until the end. "It was a good tactical game. Wolmer's came with a purpose and for the most part controlled the game," said Charlie Smith coach, Jerome Waite. "But we were not concerned as we rested some of our key players, and we brought on some of them in the second half then we were able to pick up the tempo and get the winning goal." Other teams to qualify for the second round are (winners listed first): Group A - Calabar and Excelsior, Group B - Hydel and Waterford, Group D - Jamaica College and Camperdown, Group E - St George's, Spanish Town and Innswood, Group F - Kingston College and Penwood, and Group G - Bridgeport and José Marti. |
