Woman leaves lover's body at morgue

The owner of a funeral home in St Elizabeth is threatening to sue a woman who has failed to come up with the balance of the money required to bury her loved one.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the body of the 87-year-old deceased man has been at the funeral home for over two months.

It is understood that arrangements were made by the deceased man's caregiver for him to be buried on August 27, however, that did not happen.

"She can't afford to pay for the package she chose. But based on what I know the man had a lot of land and he made a will to family members. They are wealthy and healthy. They can more than pay it," the undertaker explained.

But the caregiver told THE STAR that she was not the one who chose the package. She explained that one of the man's nephews chose the package and later backed out.

It is understood that a package for $135,000 was chosen and to date only $52,000 has been paid.

"When I check up, $850,000 outstanding from last year for me and all now I can't collect. I am gonna sue her now, the body is too long in my fridge. The gentleman has family who can bury him," the undertaker said.

disinterested

When contacted, a family member told THE STAR that, "Him (the deceased) and har (the caregiver) did deh together. She say him is a good man so she a pick a decent package. Mi cousin did tell har say she nuffi pick nuttn too big cause she nah work."

Furthermore, it was explained that the family is disinterested because of their belief that the deceased spent all his money and wasted his life on the woman.

The woman did not deny the allegations of a relationship between herself and the deceased. She, however, noted that she had spent almost 17 years as the man's caretaker without being paid.

She commented, "Dem only criticising me bout why mi tek out big package. Dem saying in the district that if I did leave dem woulda bury him."

Nonetheless, the undertaker reasoned, "Is three times mi prepare the body for funeral I am not changing the casket cause who is gonna want that now."

Meanwhile, the caregiver says she is now seeking the public's assistance to bury the deceased, as she is unable to come up with the outstanding balance

Anyone interested in assisting with the burial of the deceased is being asked to call 932-6247.
