The prodigious driving talent of Jamaica's teenage go-kart star, Collin Daley Jr, goes on display next week in Lisbon, Portugal. The St George's College schoolboy and his driving coach/mentor, Peter Moodie, depart the island today for the Estoril Race Track where Daley will test drive a Formula Car, which has a two-litre engine. "We will head to Florida first where he will continue his preparation at the Homestead Race Track," Moodie told Star Sports yesterday. They leave Miami on Sunday for Lisbon. "On Tuesday they are expected to mould a fitting seat for him in the car. The following day he will complete about 40-laps on the track. The pace will step up on Thursday when he takes part in a 25-lap simulation race. He will do a total of 55 laps on Thursday," said Moodie.
The pair are expected to return to the island next Friday. The 14-year-old Daley will be among four Red Bull-sponsored drivers who will test the Formula Car.
"Of the four, he has minimal experience. Prior to the invitation, Collin had never driven a car," argued Moodie.
President of the Jamaica Karting Association, Peter Rae, described the event as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any young karter.
"Over the last two weeks he has been through rigorous training. I think he is in a position to impress the headhunters, looking for upcoming talents," said Rae.
Neil William, a director of the Jamaica Karting Association, believes it is a great opportunity, which opens doors for other children in Jamaica racing at an early age.
"It is also an indication for the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club to start training young children to be involved in motorsport," said Williams.
