Cops' case comes to a standstill

The case involving the eight cops who were charged in January after they refused to give statements to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) came to a standstill in court yesterday after the lawyers representing the cops decided to take the matter to the Constitutional Court.

The attorneys declared their intention yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

It is reported that the attorneys asked for the trial to be halted, pending the outcome of their constitutional challenge.

THE WEEKEND STAR understands that the first hearing of the motion is set for November 24.

The cops are claiming that INDECOM has overstepped its bound in many cases involving the police.

The eight cops were charged in January after they refused to give statements to INDECOM in its investigation of the shooting death of two men, including a 16-year-old, in Spanish Town, St Catherine, last year.

The attorneys claim the cops cannot be asked to give statements when they are considered suspects.
