Davis eyes Boyz recall

Claude Davis

Discarded Jamaica international Claude Davis is hoping that a return to first team football following a move to English League Two team Crawley Town will see him recalled to the national unit.

The 32-year-old defender, who has earned some 62 caps, has not featured for the national team since the 2009 Gold Cup in the United States, where the team failed to progress to the second round. But, the 6ft 2in defender could force himself back into contention with the team currently in the building stages ahead of next year's World Cup qualifiers, having lost their last five game and conceding 12 goals.

"I spoke to my national team coach. He said it would be unfair to pick me for the country if I'm not playing first team football," Davis told UK publication This is Sussex (thisissussex.co.uk).

pecking order

First team football has proved elusive for the centre half in recent times having fallen down the pecking order at his last club Crystal Palace, who he joined after a stint at Derby County. The defender admitted that he had other options but first team football was a primary consideration. Davis, then a free agent, having not being resigned by Crystal Palace, signed with Crawley after training in Jamaica in the summer.

"In the summer, I went back to Jamaica and trained with the national team, came back and had a couple of weeks of really good training sessions with Notts County.

"They wanted to sign me, but the offer they gave me wasn't good for me and my family, so I decided if I was going to do something, I was going to do it for a manager that really wanted me," Davis said.

"The gaffer [Evans] had been ringing me for ages and said, 'Listen Claude, we can't match your salary, but we can guarantee you first team football, you're not with anybody, you need to be playing football'."

Davis has signed with the team until January.
