A man who police say stole a car and tried to elude them forcing them to give chase resulting in him crashing the car in his bid to escape was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court yesterday until today. Dwayne Austin of a Bay Farm Villa, Kingston 11, address is charged with simple larceny, no driver's licence, no insurance coverage and careless driving but has declared his innocence. Austin, who had a bandaged right elbow from a gunshot wound, told the court yesterday that he was a passenger in the car on the day of the incident when the car crashed. According to him, after he attempted to exit the wrecked car he was shot by a policeman who lined him up before taking the shot. Austin told the court that after the policeman shot him, a second policeman said to him,"You lucky eeh. You marks man mek yuh neva shoot the driver." Allegations are that the driver of a grey motor car was signalled to stop by the police and he disobeyed and continued driving. A chase ensued and the driver further disobeyed two main traffic lights and continued driving in a reckless manner. The driver crashed the vehicle and attempted to flee the scene when he was intercepted by the police and held. Subsequent checks by the police revealed that the motor car was stolen. |
