Jamaicans on murder rap in UK case put off
The case involving Tony Vincent Ashman, who is wanted in the United Kingdom (UK) for murder, was put off until Monday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Ashman, 27, is being sought by the British government for the fatal shooting of a man at a nightclub in Brixton in 2009.

The shooting was reportedly captured on video, but Ashman fled to Jamaica following the incident.

On April 14, the court ordered his release after former Minister of Justice Dorothy Lightbourne failed to sign off on the surrender warrant for his extradition.

The court said then that it had no other choice but to release him because of the minister's action.

The former minister had reportedly refused to sign the document during an apparent rift with the Director of Public Prosecutions' Office, stemming from the controversial Christopher Coke extradition.

However, THE WEEKEND STAR understands that the UK government, which was furious with the minister and the Jamaican government, reapplied to the Jamaican authorities for the extradition of Ashman.

He was rearrested this week, approximately five months after the Supreme Court ordered his immediate release from police custody.

Ashman is being represented by attorney Oswald James, who is contending that the rearrest of his client is an abuse of the process of the court and will be challenging the issue in court.
