Denial was firmly asserted in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday by a man accused of trying to rob a female police officer of her BlackBerry cellphone. Carl Abrahams, who is charged with robbery with aggravation, was remanded in custody until October 26 when the matter will go to trial. The Crown is alleging that on the day of the incident the defendant who was reportedly armed with a piece of iron and a knife attempted to rob the policewoman of her cellphone. The complainant was reportedly a passenger in a motor vehicle that was travelling through traffic when the defendant walked up to the vehicle and grabbed the smartphone from her. It is further alleged that the complainant alighted from the car and demanded that her phone be returned to her, however, the defendant refused and began to stab at her with a knife. The complainant in a bid to defend herself allegedly drew her service pistol and fired two shots hitting the defendant in his abdomen. He was later treated at the hospital. In contrast, the defendant told the court that, "There was no robbery your Honour,". According to him, on the day of the incident he was walking from Constant Spring collecting empty bottles that were discarded on the road. While walking, he said that he saw an empty bottle laying close to a football field and decided to pick it up. Suddenly, a vehicle drove towards him with two women aboard. The women, one of whom was the complainant, then disembarked with their guns drawn and pointed towards him. They instructed him to drop the bottle and he refused which led to the female cop shooting him twice in his right side. He said that after he was shot, a piece of iron that he had along with a knife fell from him as he lay wounded. He reiterated to the court that there was no robbery as the place was crowded when the incident happened. |
