JFK Martin. - Ricardo Makyn

John FK Martin is passionate about helping young people to find their way to making themselves better persons for the future. His aim is to assist in the total transformation and reform of students in Jamaica.

The Seventh-day Adventist pastor from Greater Portmore has implemented the JFK Saves Lives programme 'Save the Youth Ministry' not only in Portmore, but in two schools in St Elizabeth and Trelawny.

A part of the programme involves motivational devotions and various rap sessions talking about critical issues that affect young people today. These are issues about relationships and sex, parent-to-children and teacher-to-student relationships.

One teacher said, "I believe in this programme and I can see the transformation that is taking place within the students and how they behave positively."

feel uncomfortable

She told THE STAR a story of a young boy who was told by his teacher he would not graduate if he did not participate in a graduation fun project.

However, it apparently caused the student to feel uncomfortable with the school system and affected his attendance at school and his participation in classroom activities.

However, Martin said: "That student was not interested because the teachers don't make these students trust them." After the ministry that JFK brought at the school, the child improved.

criminal acts

He said that it is important that the teachers push for better teacher- student relationships and that their role is very important. Martin said that in his ministry: "I just share all my life and be open with them, of all the bad and criminal acts I have done to help with the transformation of the students' minds."

The minister believes that he is bound by God and only seeks to help people, especially after recounting his time as a mischievous child. "No child is born a criminal and only have gifts that need to be developed," he said.

He emphasised that JFK Ministries makes a difference through evangelism and has no problem working with any other church group.

Martin said that as much as he has played a part in the lives of youngsters, they have also done good for him. "Young people help to give me life and even reform some of my own actions as an elderly man," he said.

You can call JFK Martin at 288-5097 to receive any form of assistance.
