Born to Rhona Johnston and Sylvan Sutherland on July 19, 1988, Popcaan, or Papi as he's affectionately called, attended the Bath Primary and Junior High, Seaforth and Happy Grove High schools in St Thomas, before making his way to Portmore, St Catherine.

Music has always been a big part of his life and he proudly lists Super Cat, Sizzla Kalonji, Vybz Kartel, and international acts Nas and Tupac as his musical influences. Continuously working on his craft and honing his skills, Popcaan never gave up on his dream of being a recording artiste and a performance at an event called "My Scheme" in Portmore, St Catherine, gave him all the introduction he needed to Portmore Empire CEO Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer, who immediately began to ask questions about the young talent. Soon after Popcaan began to build his musical catalogue and recorded his first single: Wine on the Gal Farm rhythm.

Other singles followed and saw Popcaan recording with other top producers in the Jamaican industry including Leftside, Tj and Russian. His tiny frame is in stark contrast to his lyrical and musical ability as he also pens his own lyrics with a witty sense of word play.

Patiently and artfully crafting his talent, and under the tutelage of Vybz Kartel, Popcaan has already released a mixtape, won Best New Male Artiste at the 2011 EME Awards, and is now a crowd favourite for Deejay of the Year for 2011.

His single Ravin on the Summertime rhythm was a definite summer anthem, and Papi continues to release a plethora of songs. These include: Only Man She Want on the Lost Angel rhythm, Clean on the Snapback rhythm, Nuh Box Pan Jaw on the Nyphomaniac rhythm, Head Bad on the V6 rhythm and more to release in the very near future.
