CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer
The clash between Bredda Hype and Rich Squad was expected to be a fierce battle, and the selectors did not disappoint. The entire battle was straight energy from the playing of the first CD by Rich Squad in the Juggling round. The guest judges were radio disc jockey Arif Cooper and veteran metromedia disc jockey Sky Juice. A tense atmosphere could be felt at the Chinese Benevolent Association as supporters of both sounds blew their horns and knocked pot covers. The first sound to play was Rich Squad. the experienced juggling DJ made his presence felt by delivering a perfect segment playing a variety of songs from different genres and timelines. Songs such as Dennis Brown's Here I Come(Love And Hate), Junior Reid's One Blood and Bounty Killers Look had the audience in a frenzy. "When yu si some bwoy a violate yuh nuh fi fraid a dem, a dis yuh fi tell dem," said Rich Squad, before going on to play Mavado's Real McCoy. The transition of the DJ was seamless, hence giving an early indication that Bredda Hype would have to be on top of their game. Bredda Hype was next. However, the selectors appeared to have tossed aside their game plan in an effort to get even with Rich Squad. Bredda Hype is known to play songs, while exercising mic control between selections. But this time they attempted to follow the route of Rich Squad, and tried to play songs at a fast pace, and this did not work for them. Their transitions were not as impressive and as such they received a severe booing from the displeased audience. The climax of Bredda Hype's Juggling round was the playing of Vybz Kartel's Nuh More Dan Mi, but that was still not enough to remedy their poor presentation. Both judges gave the round to Rich Squad stating that the DJ had created a momentum and had stuck with it through his entire performance, unlike Bredda Hype. In the 45 round, Bredda Hype went first and he started with some old school war songs such as Merciless' Let Dem Have it. They had the crowd roaring in that instance, but were left gasping again when their four follow up songs fell short of the target. Little Richie replied with Bounty Killer's Not Another Word and Beenie Man's Wicked Man. Once again, the DJ found favour with the crowd, and it was clear that he had out classed Bredda Hype. As the clash progressed, Bredda Hype fought bravely to reclaim the dominance of their previous battles, but it was not to be. The heartless audience wanted the blood of a sound, and from all indications Bredda Hype seemed highly favoured to fill that need. At the end of notably one of the most exciting clashes of the competition, Rich Squad was chosen as the winner by unanimous decision. Sky Juice said that both selectors were good but one was better, and Afif Cooper said he meticulously scrutinised the scores and all indications were that Rich Squad was the sound to advance to the next round. |
