Rasbert Turner, Star Writer A man who pleaded guilty to collecting money to clear up traffic tickets was sentenced to three months hard labour on Friday. He is Ricardo Dixon of Rivoli district, Spanish Town, St Catherine. Before the sentence was handed down, attorney-at-law, Earl Hamilton, begged Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece not to impose a custodial sentence on Dixon.
The lawyer told the court that he has spent some time in custody and he eventually pleaded guilty to the offence.
The RM however told the defence that a message must be sent to persons of like mind.
Facts outlined are that on June 29, a motorist was attending the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court when Dixon approached him and collected $3,000 after telling the man that he was employed to the court.
The police got information of the criminal act and held Dixon. He was charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence. |
