New trial date set for accused killer

A trial date has been set for the matter involving the St Andrew businessman who has been implicated in the killing of 17-year-old Kingston College student Khajeel Mais.

Fifty-year-old Patrick Powell, who has been charged with failing to hand over his firearm and ammunition for inspection, has pleaded not guilty and was remanded until November 30 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

On Monday when the case was mentioned, there were no statements before the court in relation to the charge.

The court was informed that the statements were at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered that steps should be taken to ensure that the statements were submitted to the court in time for yesterday's mention.

In the meantime, Powell, who is also charged with murder, appeared in the Home Circuit Court on September 16 and was ordered to return on October 21 when that case will be mentioned.

The Kingston College student was shot dead on July 1.

Allegations are that Mais was on his way to a féte at the Meadowbrook High School when he was struck down.

The shooting occurred in Havendale after the taxi in which he was travelling crashed in the rear of a BMW X6 sports utility vehicle.
