Elderly man on fraud charge remanded

An elderly man, who has been charged with obtaining money by false pretence, pleaded not guilty and was remanded when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

The accused, Lenard Osborne, 76, from Berry Hill District in Irish Town, St Andrew, is to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on October 4 for mention.

Allegations are that sometime this month, one of the complainants was contacted by the accused, who expressed an interest in purchasing a house he was offering for sale. Subsequent to that, the accused through dialogue became acquainted with the complainant and borrowed money amounting to $380,000 under the pretence that he was Lloyd Thomas of a Portland address.

The court heard that another complainant, reported that between September 2010 and July 2011 he loaned the accused $148,000 after being led to believe that he was employing him to construct a dwelling house on his behalf. At that time, the accused allegedly identified himself as Linford Blair of a Portland address.

According to court documents, a third complainant reported that in September of this year, he was contacted by the accused who introduced himself as Mr Thomas of Portland. He stated that he was seeking a contractor to build a house and, as such, communication was established. During the process, however, the court heard that the accused borrowed money amounting to $88,000.

The matters were later reported to the Fraud Squad and on September 19, Osborne was arrested.

The crown argued that the accused has been before the court on multiple occasions. He, however, told the court that he was convicted of Bigamy many years ago and that he had never seen the complainants in his life.
