Constables offered $300,000 bail

Two police constables were each offered $300,000 bail when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

They are Karl Roberts and Oliver Johnson, both of the St Andrew South Police Division.

Both men were arrested and charged with two counts of breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act on Friday.

Roberts and Johnson are to return to court on Monday, November 28.

It is reported that the two policemen were arrested and charged by members of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) after an investigation was launched when a complainant alleged that Roberts and Johnson corruptly solicited, and accepted a sum of money from the complainant.

Roberts and Johnson allegedly conducted a search of the complainant's home and shop in February of 2008 and seized several illegal items.

It is reported that the two policemen corruptly solicited the sum of $50,000 in order not to arrest the owner.

It is further alleged that both policemen accepted the sum of $19,000 and returned the illegal items to the owner.
