AFRICAN CON MAN |
|||||
Dear Pastor, I am seeking some assistance. Last October, I married a Nigerian man who gave me a wrong name. I later learned his real name and that he was charged for bigamy and visa scam. He also has many aliases. His case was published in one of the daily newspapers. When I met him, he told me that he was single and had never been married. Before marrying him, I called the Registrar General's Department and was told they had no record of anyone with the name he gave me. I checked the police records, and there was nothing on him. Thus, I felt I had the green light to marry him. One day, I accidentally found out his real name and did research on him. It was then I discovered who he really was. With this new information, I again contacted the Registrar General's Department and learned that no document was submitted indicating that I am married to anyone by the names I gave. I learned that he got married to me while he was out on bail on the bigamy charge. At the time of the marriage, he was living in St Andrew. The marriage officer came to the house and officiated. When I confronted him about the information I obtained about him, and asked him and where is the marriage certificate, he told me he did not have it and that he gave it to someone. Therefore, I have no proof that we are married. I hope the marriage officer will read this and contact you or me.
I am 34 years old and was saving myself for marriage. I had never had sex before and wanted to wait until I was married. Additionally, this man has got thousands of dollars out of me through lying and deception. After engaging in this kind of behaviour for years in the USA, the law finally caught up with him and deported him back to Nigeria.
After he was deported, he got a new passport, changed his name, and went to Canada where he was charged for raping a number of women, and did the same thing as he did in the USA. Again, he was deported. He then changed his passport and came to Jamaica where he did the same thing again. The Star and other local papers reported it. Other women have uploaded his photos on the internet and told their stories. I met another woman who wrote a blog on him. She is a Jamaican, when I contact her, I also learned that she is one of his victims. She knew him by a different name. She, too, accidentally found out who he was, but by then, he had already moved on. Apparently, he is meeting women, using different names, marrying them, and taking away what they have. I have reported my incident to the police.
I would like for this story to be published so other women will recognise him. He tells people that he is a doctor, and that he is in Jamaica on a special programme. He uses a different name with each woman he meets. Sometimes he tells people that he is a businessperson and that he offers computer classes. He loves to tell people that he had a big position in the United States Army, which is a lie.
I look forward to hearing from you and giving you more information as needed.
J.H.
Dear J.H.,
You have mentioned the different names which this man uses. And you have also given different websites that have carried reports on him. I have deleted all the names you have given, the name of the websites and his description. I have done so because you have reported this matter to the police. And although I had to heavily edit your letter, women who read it would have enough information that would put doubts into their minds should he approach them.
I regret hearing that you gave yourself to this man as a virgin and you have been deceived. You thought that he was genuine. On the other hand, I sense a bit of naivety in you because you married a man and you did not even know the name of the marriage officer. The question that comes to my mind was whether this marriage officer was real or bogus. Too bad that you did not secure the certificate that the marriage officer gave to you. If you had, the Registrar General's Department would have been able to verify the authenticity of the marriage.
Work with the police. The Immigration Department would have records of this man.
