![]() Jamaican speedsters Yohan Blake (right) and Usain Bolt look at the scoreboard during the Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meeting at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels yesterday after Blake's 19.26 run in the 200m - the second fastest time in history behind Bolt's world record 19.19. Andre Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter So who is now the world's fastest man? We can at least be sure that he is Jamaican. Usain Bolt is the world record holder over both the 100m and the 200m but his training partner and good friend Yohan Blake is becoming a threat to the big Jamaican's supremacy, after clocking the second fastest 200m at yesterday's Brussels Diamond League meeting with an eye-popping 19.26 clocking. This new mark goes well with the 21 year-old's 100m world title, which came last month in Daegu, South Korea, making him the youngest 100m world champion in history, after Bolt's disqualification from the final for a false start. Bolt would have left Brussels with the headlines had it not been for Blake's sensational run, after he kept his word becoming the fastest man over 100m this year, with a powerful 9.76 run, erasing the previous world-leading time of 9.78, which belonged to compatriot Asafa Powell. Blake's 200m time is seven-hundreds of a seconds slower than Bolt's 19.19 world record, which was posted at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, but the young Jamaican believes he's now the one to beat. Referring to Bolt, Blake, the self-proclaimed 'beast' said, "Well, he is the world number one. In the 200 metres, well, I would say, yeah, I'm number one." Interesting, considering that Bolt considers the 200m to be his stronger event. surprised "I knew I could do something crazy, but to be honest I was surprised when I saw the clock at the finishing line," Blake continued in front of reporters in Brussels. Bolt, who watched his friend from trackside, put things into perspective, however, admitting surprise while noting that he is not too concerned just yet; perhaps he should be. "Listen, you need to understand, I've done great things. Yohan is coming, he is going to be a great athlete, but I'm not afraid of one athlete," said Bolt, who retained his 200m world title in Daegu. "I'm still number one. He has to beat me a couple of times before I have to start getting worried. He still has a long way to go," he continued before adding that 2012 would be "an interesting season". Blake's 200m was poetry in motion, except the start of course, with the former St Jago man registering a .269 reaction time, making him the last athlete out of the starting blocks. After 90m, he was right up on the shoulder of World Championships silver medallist Walter Dix, after taking Bolt's advice to run a contained curve. That duel lasted just a few strides later as the Jamaican unleashed his inner 'beast' to humble a frustrated Dix, whose 9.53 is a personal best and second fastest time by an American. It was enough for Dix, who was too upset to speak to reporters immediately after the race. Blake's former St Jago teammate Nickel Ashmeade finished third in a personal best 19.91. "I think all the tutoring just stopped," Bolt joked with regards to Blake. It was a Jamaican sweep in the 100m, with Bolt leading home the fast-starting Nesta Carter, 9.89, and Lerone Clarke, 10.05, who were both posting season best times. Veronica Campbell-Brown, 10.85, was second to Carmelita Jeter, 10.78, with Kelly-Ann Baptise running third in 10.90 in a repeat of the Daegu 100m results. Isa Phillips, 49.41, was seventh in the 400m hurdles; Brigitte Foster-Hylton was fifth in the 100m hurdles in 12.91; while Novlene Williams-Mills, 50.72, and Davita Prendergast, 52.12, were second and sixth, respectively, in the women's 400m. Allodin Fothergil finished fourth in the men's 400m in 45.51. |
