Scrappy Tivoli Gardens edge Denham Town

A glancing header in the 87th minute from forward Tremaine Harris yesterday allowed Tivoli Gardens High to register a 2-1 win over Denham Town in their western Kingston Group B ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel Manning Cup derby at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

Harris, who came on as a second-half substitute, was dormant for the most part but came up big when it mattered most when he rose above two defenders and placed his header well out of the reach of Denham Town goalkeeper, Rayon Fogo.

The goal brought Tivoli Gardens' supporters who were matched in numbers by their neighbours, to their feet, and handed Tivoli the perfect start as they seek to put claim to one of the group's two available second-round spots.

Theodore Lawrence had earlier given Tivoli a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute, while Fogo, with a penalty in the 41st minute, accounted for Denham Town's goal.

"It was a a bit scrappy the way we played as we weren't allowed to settle and as such could not get to play the sort of passing game that we would liked," said Tivoli Gardens coach, Raymond Thorpe.

"But nevertheless, we are grateful for the two goals and the win," he added.

best opportunity

After a hectic opening 15 minutes, it was Denham Town who got the best opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute.

Their captain Roderick Wellington could not convert from the penalty spot as his kick was saved by goalkeeper Donald Hamilton.

This provided Tivoli with a lifeline and in the 35th minute they took advantage when midfielder Anthony Melbourne netted after defender Damato Cousins miskicked inside the penalty area.

But Denham Town fought back and in the 41st minute they pulled level through Fogo who unlike his skipper converted from the penalty spot to loud cheers.

Both teams then went for the winner in the second half. However, it was Tivoli who looked the fitter of the two teams and came up trumps, much to the disappointment of Denham Town coach, Ivan Clarke.

"It was a good game that could have gone either way. I think we lost the game towards the end when we literally stopped playing. But I am heartened and I am looking forward to us improving," said Clarke.

Meanwhile, Kingston College (KC) signalled their intention of making a run for the title with a commanding 6-3 win over Penwood High at North Street.

KC got their goals through Romario Williams (seventh), Jhamie Hyde Jr (ninth), Jorginho James (45th), Jason Greenland (73rd), and substitutes David Patrick (78th) and Dorvil Jackson (85th).

Clifford Shaw, with goals in the 27th, 58th and 90th, scored for Penwood.
