Landlord woes

Dear Pastor,

Let us give thanks and praises the God. Is there a justice system in Jamaica? I have a problem. As a law-abiding citizen, I go to those who are put in place and given authority to hand out justice, only to see that those in authority are allowing open corruption and extortion to take place. I am a senior citizen and my only source of income is a two bedroom flat that I rent to tenants.

There is a sick young man who is on medication for life whose survival depends on my income. I have a case in the court with a woman, and what was given to me in court was a three-card deal. The court allowed me to get possession of my house. But the woman retained the service of a lawyer, and it was in court for the first time that I heard that her appliances were damaged.

This woman owed rent, light, etc., and I had to borrow money to pay the bills. Please note that nothing was damaged by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS). Her lawyer told the judge that they are making a counterclaim for damaged appliances by the JPS. The judge fell for such a trick. After attending court for the sixth time, I was allowed to say something on my behalf.

This woman's appliances were bought in the United States and operate on a different cycle from what is used in Jamaica. After hearing the arguments in court, the judge put off the case. This woman told a friend that the case will never be settled because the judge will continue to put off the case.

Initials Withheld

Dear ...,

You did not ask for your initials to be withheld but I have chosen to do so. I would not comment on the nature of your case, but I would suggest that you retain a lawyer. Do not go back to court without one. I wish you well.
