Pensioner pleads guilty to ganja charges
A Pensioner charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja pleaded guilty and was remanded when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The accused, Desmond Lewis, 74, from Bronx, New York, and May Pen, Clarendon, will return to court on September 28 for sentencing.

Resident Magistrate Georgiana Fraser ordered that the senior citizen's records be presented to the court before he is sentenced.

Allegations are that on Sunday September 10, about 6:50 a.m., the accused arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston to board an outgoing flight destined to New York.

It is understood that during routine checks by the K-9 police his luggage was searched. The search revealed four parcels wrapped in black plastic bag each containing loose vegetable matter resembling ganja. The total weight of the drugs was 1/2lb.

The accused who first pleaded guilty to possession and not guilty to the other charges, said that he was not aware that the drug was in his suitcase.

"My cousin pack it for me, he iron my clothes and pack it for me," he said.

Furthermore, he told the court, "This is the first time a handcuff ever drop on my hand for 74 years. I leave Jamaica and spend 10 years in England and 34 years in the United States and I have never been convicted for anything."
