Discharged officer wins back his job

A police constable who filed a lawsuit against Police Commissioner Owen Ellington after being dismissed from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) last year for alleged corruption has won back his job.

He is Constable Christopher Burton, who was formerly attached to the Seaview Gardens Police Station.

Burton was ordered reinstated by the Police Service Commission.

It is reported that Burton was dismissed in October 2010, following an internal enquiry by the JCF into allegations of corruption levelled against him.

He was charged in 2009 with corruption, but won his case before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

THE STAR also understands that Burton was later tried internally by the JCF and was dismissed as part of its crackdown on corrupt cops.

However, the cop who maintained his innocence, then filed a suit before the Supreme Court seeking judicial review of the decision of the Police Commissioner.

It is reported that the judge, who heard the application, ruled in July that the constable's appeal must be heard by the Police High Command.

On September 13, lawyers representing the cop got word that the Governor General has ordered a reversal of the decision of the Police Commissioner.
