Many benefit from SCCU's education fund

A number of organisations have benefited from the St Catherine Cooperative Credit Union's (SCCU) annual education fund.

Representatives of the various organisations were recently given cheques totalling over $100,000 to offset expenses for some of the projects they were involved in.

The recipients were told that although there is an economic challenge, the SCCU would continue to give back to the community.

Assistant treasurer of the SCCU, Samuel Cameron, said that in addition to the regular funding, persons needed to apply for the scholarships.

"I do not know what is the problem. However, we at the St Catherine Cooperative are disappointed that not enough persons are applying for scholarship assistance," Cameron said.

The Star was informed that the SCCU sponsored two students annually to the tune of $20,000 each plus money for examination fees.

"Last year we did not reach the required number, therefore, please spread the word and encourage persons to apply," Cameron said.

The function was put on by the Market and Education Committee of the SCCU where cheques were handed over to groups which applied for financial assistance.

Recipients represented St Jago High School, St Helen's Roman Catholic, Young Women's Christian Association and the Phillippo Baptist Church.

"We are thankful that the St Catherine Credit Union has contributed to us. This donation will help us to stage our expo in November," Leonard Henry of Phillippo Baptist said.

The views was echoed by Miss St Catherine Festival Queen Terry-Ann Virtue.

She presented a portrait of herself on behalf of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission to the SCCU for sponsoring her.
