Coppershot to revive sound clashing as an art form

The only thing Mathew 'Nero' Gray does not do as it relates to Coppershot Sound System is toasting. He heads up the formidable management team that keeps the lifeline of this musical entity beeping.

Describing music as his first love, Mathew reveals that Coppershot was formed by a group of friends from Campion College who would often collect records and music paraphernalia. The group later decided to transform their collective obsession with music into a win-win situation, making a business out of a hobby. The sound system comprises nine members: Cutty, Mr Shawn, Small Voice, Sanjay, Ash, Hustler, Marc Chin, Nero and DJ Donny.

With a career spanning 17 years, Coppershot has etched its name on many local events and has also graced the international scene on numerous occasions. They were the first dancehall sound system to play in countries such as Ireland, Qatar and Bahrain. They also copped the sound system of the year award at the Youth View Awards in 2008 and 2010. In addition, they were THE STAR's People's Choice for 2010.

They don't only have a heart of love for entertainment, but an equal hunger to win the competition. To their competitor, Black Blunt, they had this to say: "Sorry you had to drive so far to go back empty handed, but there is always next year."

Black Blunt will be taking no prisoners

The head honcho for the Black Blunt Sound System contends that, for him, music is not a hobby or just an interest, but his life. It is this fact, along with his infectious and animated personality, that influences Avatar to not only play music, but allow the audience to feel what he is feeling.

Born Morton Gecomma Gammon, and originally from Westmoreland, Avatar says he should not be taken lightly because of his animated personality, but should rather be seen as a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Avatar reveals that his moniker represents people who seek to go further than the norm.

Avatar, who is joined by fellow front man selector Young Blood, describes the sound system as the voice of the ghetto people, as often several such person's livelihood are enabled by music.

Unlike many other selectors, Avatar says he does not feed from the audience's energy but in turn ignites the audience with his natural high. Avatar's knowledge of many genres of music, his overall confidence and his commanding stage presence have helped to make Black Blunt a memorable sound.

Formed approximately three years ago, Black Blunt is seeking to prove that talent from rural Jamaica is just as good as or even better than urban talent. Known for using the 'cut throat' gesture to his opponents when it comes to sound clashes, Avatar, with his signature gold Mohawk hairstyle, adds that he would like his audience to not only be fully entertained but have an unforgettable experience.

Avatar dismisses his competitor as 'blank shot' and is confident that Black Blunt will be victorious.

Check out the clash between Coppershot and Black Blunt on TVJ this Saturday at 9:30 p.m.
