CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer
Last Saturday the Chinese Benevolent Association became a musical war zone when Area Code 876 and Bredda Hype sound systems went toe-to-toe until the last sound was left standing. The resident sound Chromatic handled the early juggling as they played a set packed with hardcore dancehall selections. At 10 p.m., it was time for musical war, and the two rival DJs took their places around their respective turntables. The first sound to fire musical shots in the juggling round was Area Code 876. The DJ started his segment with gospel, playing Glacia Robinson's Hold My Hands.
He then stepped up the juggling by playing I-Octane's Mine Who You a Diss and Mavado's Messiah.
"Mek mi tell yu this, wi come ya loaded," he warned Bredda Hype before going on to play Bounty Killer's Gun Nuh Stick.
Area Code 876 got a good response from the crowd at the end of their segment, but it was now Bredda Hype's time to respond.
The St Elizabeth sound immediately went on a rampage playing a series of dancehall war songs such as Vybz Kartel's Nuh More Dan Mi, Khago's Blood A Boil and Aidonia's Bad people.
"Dem nuh bad like mi shoelace a wi a win di million dollars," Bredda Hype said.
At the end of the juggling round, the judges comprised of veteran selector Jack Scorpio and producer Seanizzle, agreed that Bredda Hype was the victor.
In round two both sounds were given the task of play five songs each.
Bredda Hype went first this time, and again he went straight into war mode playing Bounty Killer's Bwoy Yu Dead.
"Di bwoy a call up mi name, but if mi nuh important dem cyaan call up mi name," he said to the delight of the audience who were appreciative of the humour.
He then played Stephen McGregor's Cyaah Fren Again.
"Him seh mi come a war wid screw face, but mi nuh come a war fi smile wid people," he said.
Bredda Hype then played Tiger's Yu Dead Now and exited on a high note. It was now time for Area Code 876 to reply and the DJ played Lovindeer's Pocomania Day and Bob Marley's Bad Card.
"Him have a start, but him nuh have nuh finish," he said questioning Bredda Hype's ability to defeat him.
After this round the judges had mixed opinions as to who was more dominant, as Area Code 876 stepped up his game in the final rounds.
The clash eventually went to sudden death, under the decision of the experienced Jack Scorpio.
Each sound had to play one song which would be the decider.
Bredda Hype warned, 'See people business and leave it alone' and the audience loved it.
Area Code 876 responded with Fantan Mojah's Stronger. However, the latter was greeted with boos, and as such Bredda Hype was the sound to advance to the next round. The competition continues this weekend.
