Alleged lottery scammer gets bail

An alleged Lottery Scammer, who has been charged with fraud, pleaded not guilty and was granted $200,000 bail when he appeared in court on Friday.

The accused, Maverick Green, 40, from Westchester in Portmore, St Catherine is to return to court on September 29 for plea and case management.

Green who appeared before Resident Magistrate Georgiana Fraser was granted bail on condition that he surrenders his travel documents and report to the Waterford Police Station daily. A curfew order between the hours of 6 p.m., and 6 a.m., was made and a stop order placed.

Allegations are that on Wednesday June 15, the accused asked the complainant to facilitate the transferral of US $2,000 to her bank account. It is understood that the complainant agreed after being told that the accused man's girlfriend who lives overseas was making the transfer.

According to court documents on June 16, the complainant visited a cambio and a cheque for the Jamaican equivalent ($170,000) was drawn and paid to the order of Maverick Green.

On June 17, three replacement cheques, two for $50,000 and one for $70,000 were allegedly drawn for the purpose of cashing and paid to the order of Maverick Green.

It is alleged that upon receiving the cheques, the accused admitted to the complainant that he actually obtained the money through the lottery scam.

The complainant also noticed that, the money order was allegedly written by a James Pearson from an Alaska, USA address.

Following this the complainant reported the matter to the police and Green was later arrested.
