Police force makes strides against bribery

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Assistant Commandant of the Region Five Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), Dr Vivian Sawyers, said members of his team are making strides against persons who offer the police bribes.

"So far, we have arrested and charged three persons within four days for attempting to bribe members of the ISCF and we will continue on this path," Sawyers told THE STAR.

According to Sawyers, the members are told that a zero-tolerance approach should be maintained against this and other types of criminal acts.

Sawyers' disclosure came after the arrest and charge of Oliver Marshall of Montpelier, Yallahs, St Thomas, who allegedly offered to give the police $2,000 to prevent being prosecuted. He is to appear in the Yallahs Resident Magistrate's Court later this week. Earlier this week in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Ravel Haye and Phillip Reid were charged between Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5 for attempting to bribe the police.

Haye allegedly offered $2,000 to the police to prevent prosecution for a traffic violation.

Meanwhile, Reid was held driving an unlicensed Toyota Hiace along Ellis Street in Spanish Town on Monday.

When the police was in the process of prosecuting him, he reportedly offered and attempted to bribe the police with $3,000, he was subsequently charged.
