A man who held a machete at the throat of an 11-year-old child, grazing it in the process, was sentenced to pay $40,000 or serve six months when he appeared in court last Wednesday.
Phillip Ellis, from a Kingston address, pleaded guilty with explanation to charges of assault at common-law in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. Allegations are that Ellis' son was involved in a realtionship with a girl who became pregnant by another man. Ellis reportedly told the girl never to come back to his home or visit his son. It is reported that the girl's brother and another person approached Ellis' home late one night and began stoning his house, breaking one of his windows. The accused reportedly ran outside with his cutlass and saw the complainant running away and proceeded to chase the child. He reportedly held the boy and put the weapon at his throat. The court was told that the boy's mother came to Ellis' house and saw the action and an argument developed and was only quelled after the police arrived. However, in court, RM Judith Pusey was not sympathetic towards Ellis and reprimanded him for holding the cutlass at the boy's throat. "Children will always play pranks, but that doesn't mean you should deal with them like that." |
