THAT HACKING SCAMMER!

with Blakka Ellis

I would have had the perfect end to a marvellous summer if it weren't for the actions of one hacking scammer. Fi real mi friends! The past week has really been a whirlwind of experiences and activities, some good and some bad.

On one level, the week was unbridled joy through and through. But on another level, a thing happened dat mek mi vex till mi blue. But, let me penetrate the good things first before giving di dutty devil him due. Let me focus on the excitement that was beamed to us straight from Daegu.

guts and grit

Lord, it did sweet, eeh? I got to revel in the glory and pride of the knowledge that even without Asafa and Usain, Jamaica still took home the men's sprint title at the IAAF Games through a blistering run by Yohan Blake. And my heart soared with pride for the guts and grit displayed by Melaine and Veronica. As my friends up North love to say, I 'teared' up! True, true!

I literally joined VCB in her tears of joy, after she steadfastly stuck to her task and held off the challenge of Carmelita Jeter to claim victory in the women's 200m. Yeah, big man can bawl to; a wah?

Our athletes all did really well. Those who won medals and even those who didn't; they all gave their best for our chaotically beautiful little nation, and we should shower them with gratitude. Peeps, as I meditated on the fact that our flag was the last one to rise in glory and our anthem was the climaxing sound at that international event, I couldn't help asking myself the great rhetorical question: 'how one lickle country great so?'

Another joyous occasion for me last week was that I finally completed one section of a long academic journey with the completion of my master's degree at York University.

Yes, I will have you know that last Friday I successfully completed my final exam, which involved defending my major project: 'MY WRITE OF RECOVERY - Jamaican Masculinities and Environmental Engagement through Personal History & Testimony: a Postcolonial Performative Portfolio'. The exams are open events, and I was privileged to have a little gathering of supporters. So mi have fi big dem up. Yes, I want to truly thank my wife Annette, my sister Charlyn, my sistrens Danae Peart and Asheda Dwyer, and my brethren Kunle, who all came out to give me added energy and inspiration to help me 'defend di ting'. It was a great week.

chaos and confusion

What almost spoilt a near perfect end-of-summer week, though, was the concerns, chaos and confusion created by a diabolically despicable degenerate who hacked into both my Gmail and Facebook accounts and tried to use my identity to scam the people in my contact list out of their money. That hacking scammer mek mi bex and bringle till a boil over!

Hundreds of people got fraudulent messages telling them that I was in Scotland and that I was attacked, robbed, stranded, and begging financial help. Listen nuh, my CariMAN brethrens in the region were getting ready to start a collection on my behalf, my friend Suzanne Fenn was preparing to send couple hundred euros from Paris, and my brethren Tony Hendriks was about to mortgage off the Buckingham palace and pawn all the loot left from the London riots to send me some cash. I'm just thankful that sensible scepticism and good sense prevailed.

Still, my simmering desire, here near the end of summer, would be to get violently busy with a heavy sledgehammer, attending to the computer used by that hacking scammer!
