30 years after child 'died'... MOM SEEKS 'DEAD' BABY

PAULA GORDON, STAR Writer

A 58-year-old woman who has been living overseas for several years has launched a search for a baby she believes was stolen from her 30 years ago.

The woman is claiming that on June 29, 1981 she gave birth to twin boys at the Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth. Sometime after her babies were born, she claims she was told that one of them had died.

Speaking with THE STAR recently she said, "Dem tek him away and tell me that him die, dem don't show me no dead body, dem just came the night and put down him clothes and say him dead."

She explained that she went into labour when she was just seven months pregnant and that the babies were born premature. The babies, she recalled, weighed 5lb and 5.5lb, respectively.

"I have the babies and they were in incubator. I did have fever, back pain and belly pain so dem cover me up and dem only leave one baby in the incubator," she added.

difficult to come to terms

She reasoned that at first she tried to convince herself that everything would be ok because she had one son left. But as time progressed, she said she found it difficult to come to terms with what she was told so many years ago.

"Whenever time I say it to somebody dem say no that child don't die, that child is somewhere," she said.

She further said, "I think dem tek him because they were so pretty, they are half Indian."

She claims that years ago someone told her surviving son that they saw someone looking just like him in Southfield, St Elizabeth.

In the meantime, the distraught mother who says she is not seeking any financial rewards, says she just wants to know if her son is still alive.

She says that if she were to find him, "I would tell him dat is not my fault and I would like him to know his other brothers and sisters."

When contacted a representative from the Black River Hospital confirmed to THE STAR that the records show where the woman gave birth to the twins at the hospital and that one of them died. The representative, however, failed to give the cause of death.

Anyone with information on the matter is being asked to call 862-1474.
