Man accused of killing father to be tried

The Preliminary Inquiry against a man charged with his father's murder is set to continue on October 12 in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

Damion Russell, 26, is charged with the murder of 48-year-old fisherman Elton Russell of the Portmore Causeway, St Catherine.

On Monday, the Crown heard deposition from three policemen and it was ruled that the case would continue with the arresting officer giving his deposition.

Constable Paul Martin told Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green that on the morning in question, it was the accused that took him to the decomposing body of his father.

''He told me when I went to the scene that he found his father's body. He then took me to the house where he had to remove a big dog that was tied to the house,'' Martin said.

The policeman told the court that Russell was the only person at the location when he went there.

Under cross-examination, Russell suggested to Martin that he was not alone when he arrived and that the dog was not tied on the house. The policeman, however, insisted that he was speaking the truth.

The Crown led evidence that the accused stabbed his father to death. He then called the police to cover his tracks.

It was revealed that the body which was in a state of decomposition was discovered by the police on July 25 last year, days after he was killed.
