10 STUDENTS INJURED IN FIGHT AT UWI

Ten persons had to be taken to the hospital last week after members from two halls of residence at the University of the West Indies (UWI) reportedly clashed over a volleyball match.

The 10 persons, who are said to be students, were reportedly taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Accident and Emergency ward for treatment, after the massive fight between two halls which involved bottles and chairs being thrown at each other.

THE STAR understands that the brawl reportedly began during the annual freshers volleyball competition which was being held on August 31 at the (UWI) Sports Bowl.

What was supposed to be a routine game reportedly got intense when supporters of the losing team got into an argument with the other team's supporters. It was reported that during the exchange, a fight began which led to both sides throwing bottles and chairs at each other.

The fight reportedly ended with the intervention of the campus police.The injured persons were then taken to the hospital for treatment.

One supporter said, "Bwoy, a suh dem a start the new year enuh, dem just start war fi nutten."

The head of campus security chief was unable to be reached for comment at press time last night. But, THE STAR understands that Hall Sports' Committee later expelled both teams from the remainder of the freshers' sports competition.

The Mona police confirmed the incident but were unwilling to provide further details surrounding the incident.
