Daegu, South Korea:

They say fourth-place is the cruellest place to finish in a race and for Jamaican 400m hurdler Kaliese Spencer, the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics is the second time she has crossed the line at a major championships to realise that she had just missed out on a podium spot.

Spencer, the 2010 Samsung IAAF Diamond League winner of the event and the world leader up to the final, which was won by Lashinda Demus, could not hold on to the third place spot she carried to approximately the 360m mark and had nothing in the form of resistance as Russian Natalya Antyukh passed her for the bronze. Spencer's training partner Melaine Walker was second.

"I didn't have the strength to finish as I usually do, it was a good race maybe if I had gotten a PB today I would have been up there but it wasn't to be," said Spencer.

"I just couldn't finish, I am always the person to go out hard and maintain but after the last hurdle I faded a bit, but I am a very spiritual person and I know it will get better, I'll just go back and work harder," Spencer continued.

bittersweet

"I'm a bit disappointed, it's bittersweet because I was out of training for a week but I was able to come here, run the final and came fourth, I would have loved to do much better but it wasn't to be this year but I'm still giving God thanks for what he has done for me this year; it has been a good season," she added.

"As you know, I had a slight, quad/groin injury that I have been getting treatment for and trying to come back fully from."

Spencer also believes that she was not aided with the lane she received considering her injury concern.

"I wanted to get an outside lane which would have been better for me but it wasn't to be and I still give God thanks," Spencer continued.

The 24-year-old is not allowing the result to affect her confidence going forward and is already looking forward to next year's Olympic Games in London.

"It's the second time finishing fourth but hopefully next year at the Olympics, I can be on that podium," Spencer said.
