'Out of Many' theme at final Tastee audition

The judges took their 'Out Of Many, One People' theme quite seriously, when they dressed the part recently.

Continuing with a theme for each audition, the judges at the final Tastee audition on Saturday, chose the Jamaican motto 'Out of Many, One People'. To this end, Amelia 'Milk' Sewell came as an oriental beauty, Audrey Reid as an Indian princess, while Oral Tracey depicted an African prince.

A massive turnout of persons was on location in Cross Roads from as early as 6:30 a.m., for the final audition in the 2011 Tastee Talent Trail series, testimony to the popularity and success of the Tastee Talent Trail.

Sponsored by Tastee, Pepsi, Breezes, Supreme Ventures, TVJ, FAME, LIME, Sparkles Production, T-shirt Express, KSAC and Kosmo Tours, the producers started registration before the advertised 8 a.m. start, in order to ease the huge build-up of persons.

Over 400 hopefuls turned out at the car park at the Tastee Head Office. Well in excess of 250 persons fell at the first hurdle, the pre-judging tent, while just short of 200 faced the judges in the final judging tent. In a departure from the usual five selectees per audition owing, obviously, to the massive turnout, eight persons were given Lifeline Cards and a chance to move closer to the million-dollar cash prize at the December finals.

Cross Roads being known for its reputation with dancers, they turned out in droves on Saturday. However, not one was able to secure a coveted Lifeline Card. At the end of the long day, which ended after 6 p.m., a magician, a group of dub poets, a singer born in Brooklyn, New York, of Jamaican parents, a DJ who scored big with judge Audrey Reid, and a singing group, were among those who made it through.

The judges had to deal with the usual substandard talent. One of these had to be put out of her misery as she slaughtered Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing. There was the trumpeter who was told that he should play only in a funeral march.

A 'wanna be' singer told the judges "Mi naw come back. a joke ting yuh a deal wid. all di while unuh dis mi."

There was a long drought in which some 31 contestants came and went in the blink of an eye. These include one who, after being turned down asked " a wah, yuh reach di limit already?" not to be outdone was the singer who told judge Audrey Reid that he wanted to win the million dollars to marry his baby's mother. After his performance, Audrey informed him his babymother would not be getting married anytime soon.

The auditions over, the Talent Trail moves on to the next phase where finalists will be engaged in a reality segment scheduled for Breezes hotel, Runaway Bay.

Those earning Lifeline Cards from Cross Roads are the quartet Voice of the Ghetto, singer John E. Rhea, magician Sean Bailey, singers Kaydene Anderson and Ann Marie Morris, DJ Jerdain Tibby and dub poets RQ- Real Quality.

These persons, as well as those selected from Portmore, May Pen, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Savanna-la-Mar, will now head into the next round, hoping to go all the way in taking home the $1-million cash prize or a second prize $250,000 or the $100,000 third prize. LIME will provide mobile phones to all the finalists at the December 15, 2011 Grand Final show.
